Thirsty for Data: AI’s Water Use in Focus

In 2018, Microsoft successfully deployed an underwater data center off the coast of Scotland, which used the surrounding seawater to maintain optimal temperatures. This approach not only eliminated the need for fresh water but also reduced the energy required for cooling, as the cold seawater was able to absorb more heat than traditional cooling systems.
Despite these advancements, there is still much work to be done to reduce the water consumption of AI technology. As the demand for data centers continues to grow, so too does the need for sustainable and efficient cooling solutions. Researchers and engineers are exploring new methods of cooling, such as the use of phase-change materials and advanced heat exchangers, which could further reduce the reliance on water resources.
In addition to technological advancements, policy changes and industry standards could play a crucial role in addressing the issue of water consumption in data centers. Governments and regulatory bodies could implement guidelines and incentives for companies to adopt more sustainable cooling methods, while industry leaders could collaborate to share best practices and drive innovation in this area.
