Google Unveils New Features to Combat AI-Generated Fake Images

In a significant announcement at Google I/O 2023, Google introduced three innovative features aimed at enabling users to identify AI-generated fake images in search results. Bloomberg reports that these features will enhance image authenticity by tracing image origins, adding metadata to Google-generated AI images, and labeling other AI-generated images in search results.

The Rise of AI-Generated Fake Images and Its Implications

The emergence of AI image synthesis models such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion has made it increasingly effortless to create vast quantities of realistic-looking fake images. This not only poses a threat to misinformation and political propaganda but also impacts our perception of historical records as an abundance of counterfeit media artifacts circulate widely.

Google’s Response: New Features for Image Search

Google plans to introduce these new features to its image search product in the coming months, as part of its ongoing efforts to combat misinformation and provide users with tools to evaluate content and understand its context. Feature 1: “About this Image”

One of the features, titled “About this image,” will empower users to access additional information about an image’s history. By clicking on three dots in Google Images results, using Google Lens to search with an image or screenshot, or swiping up in the Google app, users can uncover when the image was first indexed by Google, where it originated, and where else it has been seen online (such as news, social, or fact-checking sites).

Additionally, Google plans to enable users to access this tool by right-clicking or long-pressing on an image in Chrome on both desktop and mobile devices.

Feature 2: AI-Origin Labels

Acknowledging the growing utilization of AI tools in image creation, Google intends to label all images generated by its AI tools with distinct “markup” or metadata, embedded in each file. This clear indication of an image’s AI origins aims to promote transparency and enable users to discern the authenticity of the image.
