Celebrating South African art

Aug 18, 2016

Hats off to the SA National Gallery for investing so highly in that goal that they created an exhibition which is exciting on anyone's terms.

Celebrating the Lives and Works of South African Artists was made with South African youth and their education very much in mind.

It is a brilliant introduction for those new to South African art. The show includes plenty of star turns with stand-out works from the earliest artists right up to the present day.

These are arranged across six rooms each with a distinct theme yet part of a whole:

The Original Report (featuring Gerard Sekoto among other artists documenting everyday life in apartheid South Africa); The Quest (South African artists influenced by Africa and African art forms including Cecil Skotnes and Helen Sebidi ), Striking Back! (political art including Jane Alexander's Butcher Boys), Sacred Heritage (art and the spiritual with mainly rural artists such as Jackson Hlungwani); The New Report (post-democratic identity in South African) and The Body Politic (gender and body issues including Mary Sibande's heroic sculpture The Reign).

Catch this before it closes. View more info here
