 The lights go out and the sounds of djembe drums sets the scene as the velvet curtains open on a group of young dancers for this contemporary dance forming part of Artscape’s Heritage Month celebrations.

There’s a literary fest happening in Cape Town this week, with Fine Free Week at the city libraries, National Book Week, International Literacy Day and the Open Book Festival all happening between 5 and 11 September.

The Open Book Festival, a major annual literary event, is in its 6th year. CityLife spoke to organisor and proprietor of the Book Lounge, Mervyn Sloman, about this year’s line-up.
