New hotspots this month

May 18, 2017

This is fast becoming one of the foodie capitals of the world and there’s always somewhere new to try.

Here are some CityLife top picks:

Popping up in 20 countries
Three chefs are aiming to work their way through 20 countries in 20 months, building and running a pop-up restaurant from scratch and discovering local culture through local produce. The team – James Sharman, and Kevin and Trisha McCrae – have set up table at an AirBnB lodging at 38 Lower Church Street, Woodstock, and are taking dinner reservations until 11 May. Buy a ticket for One Star House Party and experience a menu created by chefs who have trained in some of the world’s best restaurants including the Michelin-starred NOMA in Copenhagen and The Ledbury in London. The chefs present each of the dishes themselves and take you on a journey spanning the courses and the local produce. To book visit www.onestarhouseparty.com

Best view in town
The new Silo Hotel in the Waterfront has opened, with a fabulous restaurant called the Granary Café. It’s on the sixth floor with stunning views, but luckily it’s not out of the reach of Capetonians – even if it’s for a special occasion. Chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert, previously of Ellerman House and the Mount Nelson, heads a kitchen that produces breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and even a Sunday roast. It’s a five-star hotel, so expect to pay hefty prices for your drinks. Bookings are advisable. Call 021 670 0511 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. Pizza perfect
Hail Pizza at 133 Bree Street is developing a serious fan base. The restaurant, tucked away behind Clarke’s Bar and Dining Room, serves a limited menu of West Coast oysters, salads, seven wood-fired pizzas, a daily ice-cream scoop and some snacks. It’s open in the evenings from 17:00 Tuesday to Friday, and on weekends. UberEats delivers. During the day, the venue doubles as a place called Wholesome, offering healthy breakfasts and light lunches. For more information, call 072 349 3551.
